What is Naturopathic Medicine?
The term "Naturopathic Medicine" refers to a distinct system of primary healthcare that uses natural methods and substances to support and stimulate the body's inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine can be summarized most simply as helping the body/mind heal itself in the least invasive, most fundamentally curative manner possible. This approach works with principles that involve the whole person and educating the patient in the ways of health.
Dr. Gawenda views the individual as an integral whole where symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body and unfavorable lifestyle habits. The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of the disease.
Naturopathic doctors can also complement and enhance health care services provided by other health care professionals. They provide patients with a truly integrative form of health care.
How are Naturopathic Doctors Trained?
Naturopathic doctors registered and licensed in Ontario must complete four years of professional training at a recognized college of naturopathic medicine. Pre-admission requirements include three years of pre-medical studies at a university. Training includes basic, medical, and clinical science; diagnostics; naturopathic principals and therapeutics; and extensive clinical experience under the supervision of licensed naturopathic doctors. Graduates receive the title "N.D." or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine.
